I recently
forwarded to you a copy of excerpts of letters between Great Great Grandfather,
James Masters Curtis, and his brother, Mark Daniel Curtis. The story is of the journey to the 1850
California Gold Rush. Mark
returned sucessful and bought a farm in Peoria, Illinois. I have previously commented on the
adventuresome quality of your ancestor and how it may have related to some of
our radical approaches.
I want now to
comment briefly to you children, the fifth generation since, on the material and
philosophical aspects of this adventure.
Great great grandfather, through passion, creativity and imagination (noble
qualities of the academy of Aristotle) did incidentally accumulate some
assets. Those assets have passed
from him to Great Grandfather, Robert,
who moved to San Diego and drove a tour bus to Tijuana before becoming an architect. His estate included the beach house in
Mission Beach which then passed from him to my Father, Carl, who raced paddle boards at the annual La
Jolla Cove race. I, due to
circumstances of out of control population growth in San Diego, moved the asset
to Hawaii. So it has gone from: gold in the hills of California; to a
farm in Peoria; to a beach house; to an agriculture project in Hawaii.
